Consultation
All initial consultations are without charge. Feel free to call us with your questions and concerns. We will investigate the issue and help you decide if an assessment is needed. Whether or not you choose to test with us, we will provide you with options and information. If an assessment is needed, the next step is:
Formal Diagnostic Testing
Using nationally-recognized tests, we evaluate both cognition (the ability to learn) and achievement (reading, writing, math). Cognitive testing includes short and long-term memory, listening skills, processing speed , phonics, auditory and visual learning, numerical reasoning, and more. Achievement testing covers multiple areas of reading such as fluency and comprehension, and also assesses written expression, writing fluency, math fluency, and math calculation. Testing for dysgraphia or ADHD may be added.
Most testing is completed within one day, with cognitive testing in the morning, a lunch break, and achievement testing in the afternoon. For younger children or those with attention or health issues, testing may be broken into two sessions on separate days. Most children and adults, however, find the testing process to go by rather quickly and easily, and, especially with the cognitive tests, enjoyably. We provide beverages and snacks as well as frequent breaks, lunch break, and small incentives or prizes for school age children.
Scoring and Synthesis
A complete 9 to 12-page report is usually available within one week of testing. This report details strengths and weaknesses, any formal diagnosis of dyslexia or other condition, and includes recommendations for the classroom, for testing, and with adults, for the workplace. We then provide much needed follow-up through the:
Final Review Meeting
We meet to present a detailed report, offering specific recommendations for evidence-based interventions and accommodations to ensure a clear path to success. Clients are also directed to online and local resources that may be available. After the final review meeting, we can provide phone consultations for follow up information as needed
FAQ
What constitutes a comprehensive dyslexia assessment?
A comprehensive assessment is an in-depth evaluation investigating a child’s profile in reading, spelling, and writing, alongside cognitive processes like phonological awareness and rapid naming. This clinical approach identifies the specific profiles of dyslexia to provide a roadmap for educational support.
What is the duration and structure of the evaluation?
Typically, an assessment session lasts between 4 and 6 hours. Depending on the child’s persistence, we often structure testing across two separate sessions scheduled on different days. This ensuring fatigue does not diminish the accuracy of the clinical results.
What follow-up is provided after testing?
Upon completion, you will receive a comprehensive written report documenting scores and observations. We schedule a formal consultation to review these findings, helping parents understand their child’s educational needs and providing actionable school-based recommendations.
Can parents schedule testing directly without a referral?
Yes. A referral from a school or physician is not necessary. We work directly with parents in San Antonio to assess their concerns and determine if a formal evaluation is the correct step for their child’s specific learning journey.
